It's in Season — Strawberries

Strawberries are here from JSM Organics and we are SO EXCITED!!

There’s something very special about strawberry season and we get pretty excited about it here at the Co-op. Plenty of folks eat strawberries throughout the year because they’re available, but the flavor is usually lackluster. Tasting the first strawberry in spring from JSM Organics can be an experience felt throughout the entire body. It can catch you off guard and change your definition of the word “delicious”. The same can be said for tomato season and stone fruit season…which are fast approaching!

JSM is the Co-op’s sole strawberry producer from May through mid-November, with the exception of a few deliveries of strawberries from Terra Firma Farm in Winters. At peak strawberry season, we get 200 cases of strawberries a week from JSM–that’s 1600 pounds of these treats!

JSM is a 200 acre organic farm in Monterey County. Owner Javier Zamora is a second-generation farmer who grew up helping his dad farm in Mexico. He is a strong advocate of sharing his farming wisdom with beginning farmers and was one of the first farms to use sustainable cardboard packaging, which he uses as long as he can get it! He is passionate about soil health and the health of the community and future farmers. In addition to strawberries, he and his hardworking team also grow a variety of veggies, stunning flower bouquets and berries that could change your life.

If you need another reason to try JSM Organics strawberries, and you’re at all concerned about the effect of harmful pesticides on your health, strawberries are #1 on the Environmental Working Group’s “Dirty Dozen” list for 2023. Every year, this group tests non-organic produce for pesticide residue and names the top 12 crops that have been found to top the charts this year. Strawberries are always in the top 3, so it is one of the crops that they recommend only buying organic.

A lot of folks enjoy the experience of eating strawberries out of hand so much that they can’t imagine eating them any other way. Others love to add them to quickbreads, pies and crumbles, salads and cocktails. When you’re in the Co-op next, do yourself a favor and pick up a container of JSM strawberries–you won’t regret it!
